Instead offer carbohydrate such as rice, pasta, or boiled potatoes, with lean white meats such as chicken, turkey, cod, or coley fish. Medications and dietary restrictions are necessary to manage acid reflux but if it is caused by a hiatal hernia surgery will also be needed. Food is often restricted for a day or two and then a low-fat and low-protein food is fed in small, frequent intervals throughout the day. Except for surgery, treatment is usually managed by the dog owner at home. My Pookie is a four-month-old poodle and constantly had trouble with eating.
How to Treat Acid Reflux in Dogs
Taking the next step to determine if your pet has Acid Reflux will be to arrange an appointment with your veterinarian. Your vet will start with a simple examination. However, if there is suspicion of an Acid Reflux problem, your vet may suggest a range of tests, including blood and urine analysis, or a chest x-ray. If these tests are still inconclusive, and advanced testing is required, a vet may perform a fluoroscopy (x-ray), or esophagoscopy (viewing scope), to get a better look at the conditions of the esophagus for determining the cause of symptoms. Acid reflux is a common disease in dogs that needs to be monitored.
Most dogs are typically fed two large meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Because acid production increases in between meals, this is one reason why dogs often develop signs of acid reflux at night. Indeed, the existence of a prolonged gap between meals is a main culprit for the accumulation of secreted acid in the stomach.
I am pretty confident our dog has acid reflux as pepcid AC seems to help her. However, I would like to try the boiled chicken/rice combo. How much do you feed for her weight per day? She’s about 55 pounds. Dogs do have acid reflux problems, but no as commonly as people.
Is Acid Reflux Disease Ever Treated With Surgery?
It is important to keep him on the diet and feeding schedule that your vet suggests. Each incident of gastric reflux will further weaken the esophagus and increase the chances that there will continue to be problems.
Your dog, cat, or other pet may not be able to convey their problems to you the way people would. However, with diligent observation a lot can be determined. For instance, your animal may be having pain when swallowing, or it could be ongoing, resulting in crying, whining, or howling. They may be lethargic, and noticeably inactive after eating.
What Is Acid Reflux Disease?
Interestingly, I have found that hypochlorhydria, which is lack of sufficient stomach acid, has also contributed to acid reflux in pets, as well as the additional symptoms of burping, gas, and abdominal bloating. It’s important to know which of these situations is affecting your pet, however, since a lack of stomach acid is treated very differently from an overproduction of acid. Giving supplements to increase gastric acid production to an animal that has an ulcer or esophagitis will obviously make matters much worse. Acid reflux can occur when a pet is given anesthesia that causes the esophageal sphincter to relax, creating an opening between the stomach and the esophagus. This most often happens when a patient is improperly positioned while undergoing anesthesia on the surgery table, or when an animal isn’t fasted properly before receiving anesthesia.
We know that this is great for the pH balance of the stomach and can get rid of much of the extra acid in your dog’s stomach.
Different vets may suggest different diets. Other diet choices may include highly digestible diets such as Hills i/d or Purina Veterinary Diets EN. Over the counter choices include Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat dog food or Wellness Core Reduced Fat Adult Dog food. While the production of acid is in many cases is not problematic, problems start when gastric acid ends up reaching the esophagus.
I was giving Pepcid for any flare-ups with helped a lot. In the last couple months, Pepcid no longer was enough. He has taken Cerenia on an as needed basis and for the last 2 months has been on 1/4 pill of 10mg Losec daily. If he misses his Losec even by a couple hours, he is in pain and stomach gurgles excessively. He had a dental cleaning this past week for bad breath and did great with the first 48 hrs post-op and now for the past 48hrs he has a lot of pain and stomach gurgles.
