This is because caffeine is a known trigger of acid reflux. Many people with GERD find that certain foods trigger their symptoms. No single diet can prevent all symptoms of GERD, and food triggers are different for everyone. Asthma, whether “cough-variant” (where cough is the sole or predominant symptom) or “classic” (with symptoms including wheezing) is the second most common cause of chronic cough, found in 24-29% of patients.

You can also talk to your doctor about giving your child probiotics, which are available as drops for infants who are breastfeeding or in powder that can be mixed into baby’s bottle. If you’re formula-feeding, you can use a formula that already has probiotics mixed in, but again, check with your pediatrician first.
Most LPR patients have only mild symptoms. Unlike GERD patients, they seldom have heartburn or regurgitation. Laryngoscopic examination most commonly demonstrates findings in the posterior glottis and vocal folds. Laryngeal edema is an important indicator for LPR that is most often neglected.

Treatment for GERD-usually aggressive acid suppression therapy, an approach that requires significant diet and lifestyle modification-may still be inadequate, and the addition of prokinetic therapy with additional medication may be necessary. Those who don’t respond sufficiently to acid suppression and prokinetic therapy may be candidates for laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, or “antireflux surgery,” which, based on small published reports, has yielded quality of life improvements in up to 90% of patients who have undergone it. According to Dr. David Mannino, one sign that the acid reflux of GERD could be affecting your lungs is if you wake up in the middle of the night gagging, especially with a sour taste in your mouth.
I find that if I watch what and when I eat, I’m ok. Acid reflux every now and then isn’t cause for concern, but if it’s becoming a regular thing, you should check in with your doctor. Although occasional acid reflux won’t kill you, it should still be taken seriously. If left untreated, chronic acid reflux can lead to conditions that increase your risk for developing esophageal cancer, which can in fact kill you.
One of the most important things you can do is to elevate the head of your bed. To do this, use blocks, books or bricks underneath the legs at the head of the bed. The elevation should be 4-6 inches or so, but not high enough that you will slide down when sleeping. Professional singers with acid reflux should consider traveling with blocks in their suitcase for use in hotel rooms. Pregnancy will markedly increase symptoms of heartburn and sometimes throat symptoms as well.
Most people with GERD and acid reflux will respond to lifestyle changes or medication, or a combination of both. The amount of stomach acid needed to irritate the lining of the throat and voice box is quite small.
- It’s the one whose symptoms more closely resemble those of the common cold or allergies.
- Eat smaller meals.
- If you already have diagnosed asthma, talk with your asthma physician (often an allergist/immunologist or a pulmonologist) about your symptoms.
- They attribute their discomfort to something they ate or drank and self-medicate with over-the-counter antacids, H-2 blockers or proton-pump inhibitors (PPI).
- This patient group are considered to the best candidates for Nissen fundoplication.
These drugs, such as omeprazole (Prilosec) and lansoprazole (Prevacid), prevent the stomach from making acid. Losing extra weight has been shown to be one of the best ways to reduce or eliminate acid reflux symptoms. For acid reflux that occurs with eating, avoiding large volume meals and keeping track of foods that may trigger symptoms can also help.
When to See a Gastroenterologist for GERD
The prognosis for acid reflux (GERD) is good in mild to moderate cases. Chronic cases often respond to prescription drugs, and severe cases may require surgery to avoid serious complications.
However, others need more aggressive and lengthy treatment. If this is not effective or if symptoms recur, your doctor may suggest surgery.
Acid reflux is treated with over-the-counter or prescription medications, depending upon the severity of the symptoms. Other causes are less common and should be thoroughly evaluated by an ENT specialist. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about whether certain foods should be a part of your diet. Foods that help improve acid reflux for one person may be problematic for someone else. People with acid reflux may notice their symptoms acting up after their morning coffee.
When stomach contents irritate the voice box and back of the throat/nose, symptoms are less often heartburn, and more often consist of post nasal drip, throat clearing, cough, and lump in the throat. I have been having voice problems on and off for about a year now. My PCP prescribed prednisone and a Z-pak for laryngitis.
Try them grilled, broiled, baked, or poached. Oatmeal is a breakfast favorite, a whole grain, and an excellent source of fiber. Oatmeal can absorb acid in the stomach and reduce symptoms of reflux. Other fiber options include whole-grain breads and whole-grain rice. One reason this happens is that the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is weakened or damaged.
